Alcohol increases hay fever symptoms, experts warn

Bad news for those who like to enjoy a few drinks at their summer barbeques – histamines found in beer, wine and spirits trigger our bodies’ allergic responses, worsening hay fever symptoms.

Histamines produced by yeast and bacteria during the fermentation process provoke allergy symptoms and make our bodies more sensitive to pollen.

In addition, the dehydrating effects of alcohol can heighten the effects of hay fever.

So for those wanting to quell the runny noses and itchy eyes, it may well be worth sticking to soft drinks at the next barbeque.
